Exactly 25 years ago today, on April 22, 2001, Chris Hadfield made history by becoming the first Canadian to step out into the vacuum of space. During the STS-100 mission, Hadfield and NASA astronaut Scott Parazynski performed a grueling seven hour spacewalk to install the Canadarm2 on the International Space Station. This 17.6-meter robotic arm became a vital tool for station assembly and maintenance, and it continues to be used for catching incoming cargo ships today. The mission was a high-stakes operation that required perfect coordination, cementing Canada’s legacy as a world leader in space robotics. Hadfield’s historic exit from the hatch remains one of the most significant milestones in the history of international space flight.
